Preschool at Sunnyside Christian

When choosing a preschool for your child, you want a place where they will be excited to explore, learn, and make friends. Parents seek a fun learning environment and teachers who enjoy teaching, interacting with young children, and sharing the Gospel of Jesus.

We encourage you to explore and learn more about Sunnyside Christian Preschool! We focus on helping our youngest Knights learn in a playful, structured environment.

For personal development, we help your child:

  • gain confidence
  • experience learning within a larger school environment
  • develop friendships

On an academic level, your child will:

  • recognize letters and learn to form them correctly
  • begin to count by twos, fives, and tens
  • Develop fine motor skills including holding a pencil and using scissors

A Day in the Life of an SCS Preschooler:

Walking through the door, I am greeted by Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Apol. I hang up my backpack and jacket, put my Show and Tell on the special table, then open the mailbox to find my name and trace my letters.

I sit at the table to work with Mrs. Hughes on counting, coloring, cutting and staying focused on my work. We make so many fun art projects that usually end up hanging on the wall outside our classroom so all the other students can see what we’ve made. My favorite is the painted kites we made for spring.

When I’m finished, I play with our classroom toys while my classmates create their craft. I love playing with the cars and trucks on the carpet, and sometimes I pretend I’m cooking in our play kitchen. I’m working on getting better at learning to share and play with my new preschool friends.

When Mrs. Apol says it’s time to sit on the carpet, I know I must calm myself and prepare to think. We count calendar days, recite the days of the week, say the Pledge of Allegiance, listen to a story, and answer questions about what we heard in the book.

Next is Show and Tell, my favorite! I show my favorite toy – the dinosaur with moveable legs and arms. I answer a few questions from my friends, then put my toy back in my backpack. Some of my friends are shy, but Mrs. Hughes always encourages us to be brave.

There’s the bell! It’s time for recess! We must walk through the hallway quietly, but we’re free to run once we’re outside. It’s so much fun to climb on the playground equipment and play basketball. I always look for my friends from Kindergarten, and we have fun playing together.

When we return inside and hang up our jackets, Mrs. Apol has our snack ready. It was my turn to bring snacks last week. My friend, Alex, brought the snacks today – crunchy carrots and apple juice! First, we sing our prayer song, and then it’s time to eat.

Before I know it, we’re done for the day. Goodbye, Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Apol, and friends! See you Friday!

When we’re not going through our daily routine, you’ll find us taking our learning into the community, visiting local businesses to learn how things work. We mail letters at the post office, peek inside the vault at the bank, feed cows at the dairy, and pick pumpkins at the farm. And we sure enjoy having our parents along for these trips!
